Five years ago, America and the world witnessed a massive natural and man-made disaster when Hurricane Katrina struck Louisiana and the Gulf Coast with devastating fury. Strengthening Families of Haiti

African American adoption agencies have a collective interest in being a resource for the children who are homeless and/or without custodial care in Haiti. We are concerned both about their vulnerability and the associated dangers and also about the negative repercussions of well intended, yet misguided efforts to provide alternatives for the children of Haiti who are in need of care. We also wish to express support for Haitian policies, consistent with Haitian culture and tradition, which would ensure Haitian children’s optimal development and healing in mind, body and spirit; considering the trauma experienced by the devastating earthquake over and above the day to day suffering we know has existed in Haiti.

Fact Finding and Assessment Delegation to Haiti

February 9-12, the Haiti Support Project led a Fact Finding and Assessment Delegation to Haiti. The goal of the Delegation was “to observe conditions in Haiti first hand and share information about the state of the relief/recovery and reconstruction effort with millions of people of African descent upon our return.” Primarily composed of African American journalists, HSP embarked on this mission with the understanding that long after the major news outlets in the U.S. have ceased to shine a spotlight on Haiti, the Black press will continue to carry the story.

Building the New Haiti
Creating a Place for African Americans at the Table

As President of the Institute of the Black World 21st Century (IBW) and Founder of the Haiti Support Project (HSP), I have just returned from leading a team to Haiti to allocate the first contributions from the IBW/HSP Haiti Relief Fund. A total of $56,000 was distributed to nine community-based/grassroots organizations including women’s, youth and peasant groups for relief and capacity-building. Deeply concerned about the plight of Haitian children orphaned by the disastrous earthquake, our team also visited orphanages and assessed the progress of the Oasis Institute, an ambitious Initiative which is designed to relocate orphans and extended family members from tent communities to an interim camp with safe/secure environment, post-traumatic stress counseling and a world class education.
